I visited the Amish settlement of Grabill, Indiana last week and one of the most striking characteristics of the community are the homes. Â There are an eclectic mix of suburban type homes to traditional rambling Amish farmhomes. Â As you can see from some of the photos below, many of the Amish homes in Grabill look like ones you'd see in "Suburban Anywhere." Â While the traditional farmhouses that are there are often added on to and sprawling to accommodate multi-generational families.
Note the solar panels visible on rooftops, the Amish of Grabill have definitely embraced solar which powers all sorts of things without putting them "on the grid."

More traditional farmhouses are also mixed in among the more modern-looking Amish homes.

Kevin...Beautiful, but different looking homes, in Graybill, for sure!
Have you ever visited the Amish-Mennonite community around South Wayne, WI. ?
I would LOVE to see pictures of that area. I am not sure if it is Horse & Buggy country,
or not? But, I do know that some of the residents there, along Old Hwy. 11, run bakeries
and bulk food stores. next to their homes, and are allowed phones in the business.
Do you have any photos of that area? Thanks~ C.J.
Kevin
It's been awhile, but I have been to that are CJ...I'll repost some photos sometime!

Coming from Hardin County Ohio and the old order Amish a friend was surprised to see the homes of the local Amish in neighboring Logan county near Belle Center Ohio...beautifully made and landscaped homes too! You might be interested in a bike tour the OSU extension office and YMCA in Hardin county sponsor I believe next one coming up is in June or July...usually posted on facebook. Its a bicycle tour thru the Amish backroads of Hardin county-diff length routes and kids came come /ride and goodies and lunch at a amish family home after.
Kevin
Thanks for the info Nannette, that sounds wonderful..I love to bike, I'll have to do that someday!

Indiana, Tom...there are some similarities in housing styles, but, wow, Grabill is clustered into a small, small area where Conewango is sprawling and spread out...very opposite communities in that way!
