Visit to a Swartzentruber Produce Farm

Tucked away in the hills of bucolic Highland County, Ohio I stumbled upon a delightful Amish-run, family-owned produce business.   The family had 10 children and some amazing produce grown right on their farm.  The tomatoes were plump and juicy and if there weren't cucumbers or peppers on hand, well, the kids were just set out into the field to pick some and bring them back to us.

It was kind of interesting because the Amish family shared a lot with a non-Amish family, which isn't typical, but with farms being in short supply, they sort of take what they can get.   The arrangement seemed to work well for everyone, with the non-Amish and Amish homes being far enough part that it wasn't like they were on top of one another.

In addition to produce, Highland Acres also had fresh eggs on hand...the eggs , when scrambled, scrambled up curiously light in color...anyone know what might cause that? They tasted just fine....

Kids out on the produce wagon on their way to pick us some cucumbers...

This little guy was waking up from an afternoon snooze...

The Amish family's fields produced enough goodies for the surrounding community while their garden, pictured here, provides plenty for them!
