Okay, it is time for our weekly romp through the blogosphere to explore anything and everything having to do with Plain culture that has been posted within the past week. Our first stop:
AMISH SCHOOL RISING: Backroads Traveller Tom posts another gem, this one shows sequential shots of an Amish schoolhouse being built. Interesting photos and commentary from the rapidly growing Amish settlements of western New York State.
IOWA AMISH: When we think of the Amish in Iowa, most thoughts gravitate towards the larger community of Kalona. But the Hawkeye State has a rapidly growing and diversifying Plain population. This blogger’s post takes us into Miller’s Country Store which I believe is in the Hazleton-Independence Amish community near Oelwein. This is another long-established, not quite-as-large community. Lots of neat Amish businesses there (as featured in The Williams Guide!:)
AMISH & TAXES: Three cheers to this blogger for squashing one of the most persistent untruths about the Amish: yes, they pay taxes!
SAND TARTS: This is a very thin, wafer-thin, cookie that is popular among the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish included) populations of Pennsylvania. You don’t run into this cookie much outside of Pennsylvania. It is very popular around the holidays. Click here to read more and to get the recipe!
