Have some fun posts this week, so let’s get right to it:
AMISH CHOCOLATE FUDGE PIE: Really, how can you go wrong with this? Answer: you can’t. Amazing Amish dessert, a classic confection of chocolate in a crust. Yeah, this is right up my alley. Click here to see this wonderful Amish recipe posted on Patricia’s Patchwork blog. Delicious, for sure.
MEEMAW’S EASTER MENU: Check out two great recipes from my favorite blogger in Kalona, Iowa (home to the state’s largest Amish settlement), this week she shares a recipe for pickled beets and eggs (an Amish staple) and a unique Easter biscuit that is sure to be a conversation starter! Click here.
AMISH PHONE SHACKS: The Amish have different levels of tolerance for the telephone, depending on which community you are in. The most conservative still generally have no phones, the more liberal ones will even have cell phones. And the rest fall somewhere in between, with many allowing “phone sheds” somewhere on the property. Unless things have changed, and I doubt they have much, the Amish settlement in Berne, Indiana has centrally located phone “mega-shanties” where one shanty serves maybe 40 families, so the shanty might have 5 phones in it. Anyway, Erik Wesner takes us on a tour of an Amish settlement in Virginia via their phone shanties.
KATIE TROYER: Some more fun photos from Katie as Florida’s snowbird Amish settlement empties out until next winter. Click here.
INTERESTING BUGGY: My Amish Indiana blog caught up with an interesting-looking buggy in the Grabill, Indiana settlement. Apparently the buggy was imported from Europe and is used to train horses. Never heard of that being done before, so that is interesting…click here to see this funky buggy.
