Buckle up and prepare for our weekly whirl through the blogosphere in search of anything and everything Plain. We have some delicious stuff this week! First of all, as picnic season approaches, who likes a good macaroni salad? I know I do. A blog post shared a delicious-looking recipe for it that I thought I'd share. Delicious Amish macaroni salads that I have tried in the past really meld flavors well and put in a little crunch (like some celery or carrot or both) with the soft pasta.
SKILLET BLACKBERRY COBBLER: This isn't an Amish dish per se, but it sure looks the part with healthy, plump blackberries baked in an iron skillet. Top with vanilla ice cream and you have Nirvana. Yum! Click here for the recipe and photos.
BIRTHPLACE OF MENNONITES! I wish the writer had delved a little deeper, but this blog is still worth visiting for the photos, a photo of the very church that Menno Simons - former Catholic - was once priest and broke away to launch his new religion. Just being able to see that place with my own eyes in the photo was really riveting (It's surprisingly small). From that tiny church, centuries later, the movement Menno Simons launched is still vibrant, alive and well...amazing...click here to see.
3 MENNONITE POINTS TO PONDER: Deborah Ruth Ferber, who was raised Mennonite, reflects on her upbringing and cites three traits that Mennonites have in common, whether they are more liberal or horse and buggy. This is an interesting and thought-provoking piece! Click here to read.
HEALTHY STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE: SIGH, or it is healthful? My high school grammar teacher always said that a food can't be "healthy" and more than a food can be "sick." A food can't feel. So "healthful", she said, was the proper term. But a "healthful strawberry shortcake?" Sounds weird. Anyway, talented young Mennonite blogger Briana Thomas shares a recipe for homemade strawberry shortcake this week. I've said I'm not a huge fan of artificial sweeteners, but her recipes look so good she just might persuade me one of these days (and, sheesh, I'm hardly one to be dispensing diet tips). Click here for Briana's recipe just in time for strawberry season!

A comment on the Mennonite post was from someone who said they were a member of the "Church of the Brethren", I think? Is that a related religion? I would google it, but I probably need to get off of here and get back to work...sigh...

Carla, the church of the Brethren has no connection to the Mennonite church. Rosanna is German Baptist, which is part of the Brethren movement. Mennonites and Brethren share some similarities but are totally separate -Kevin
