Okay, buckle your seatbelt and get ready for this week's whirl into the blogosphere in search of everything and anything Plain. We've got an interesting (and delicious) selection this week, so let's get right to it!
CASHTON, WISCONSIN: This is a blogger's post about a recent journey out in the country side near Cashton, Wisconsin where there is a sprawling Amish community. My understanding is that this is a pretty conservative group of Amish. The way this writer describes the women and children scurrying towards the house when an outsider approaches is not typical of more "middle of the road" Amish communities, usually only the most conservative. I've heard about some very conservative courtship practices in this area too that are not typical of, say, the Amish of northern Indiana or Holmes County, Ohio. Would love to visit this settlement sometime, but a blog post like this is the next best thing. Check out this blog post for some interesting info and good photos!
AMISH 8-MINUTE NO-BAKE CHEESECAKE: YUM...check out this interesting and delicious post. The cheesecake takes 8 minutes to make, for me, probably only 4 minutes to eat!:) Click here.
MENNONITE HISTORY BITE: For the more intellectual among us, there is a short piece from a Mennonite pastor that delves a bit more into the roots of Menno Simons (founder of the Mennonite church) and the practice of "home worship" that the Amish also espouse. The pastor laments that the Mennonite church is growing increasingly structured. Click here to read his thoughts.
NEW YORK AMISH: Ahhh, I've said before, I on my bucket list: hit the road for a day with "Backroads Traveler Tom" a New York blogger who shares my passion for getting off the interstate and exploring the quirks and crevices on the less beaten paths. In Tom's area of New York there are a patchwork of Amish settlements from all orders so he can really get a great sampling. He explored some of his "Amish backyard" this week and shares some stunning photos. Click here.
IDA LEHMAN'S AMISH APPLE CAKE: Patricia shares an Amish apple cake recipe with us from Ida Lehman. Ida is part of the Greenville, PA Amish settlement which is located in Mercer County. This is a pretty conservative community. Patricia got the recipe from a tiny cookbook put out by that settlement. It's in those small, local cookbooks where I think you can find some real treasures of recipes. The apple cake looks delicious! Click here for the recipe.
