Vanceburg, Kentucky is a small, relatively new Amish settlement in Mason County. I hope to make it to Vanceburg one of these days and look forward to sharing photos and stories from there with you all when I do. Vanceburg is where this homemade Twix Bars recipe comes from and, oh boy, is this an amazing sweet treat!
SIGH, I am pushing 50 and the Easter Bunny still brings me a basket each year. Parents give me candy. Wife gives me candy. I eat the kids overflow Easter candy. In other words, there is a lot of candy around this time of year. And one of my favorites is Twix bars. There is just something about the crunch and chocolate combination that is so perfect.
This homemade Twix bar recipe is a "copycat" recipe and copycat creations are common in Amish kitchens.
The reasons for being a copycat are both practical and fun. First, historically, most Amish have lived far from conventional grocery stores. So if one wanted to indulge in something like a Twix bar, doing so is not the easiest thing in the world. And even so buying something like a Twix bar would seem to be a frivolous indulgence for the historically thrifty Amish and the chocolate would melt during the buggy ride back home. But learning to make a "copycat" version, that is just fun. Cooking and baking are popular pastimes among the Amish. So that is why you see so many "copycat" recipes among the Amish: homemade "Heinz" catsup, homemade "Pizza Hut" pizza sauce, etc. Enjoy this copycat Twix recipe!
Here are some helpful hints you might use when preparing the recipe along with some process shots below:
To crush the graham crackers into crumbs, I put the crackers into a ziploc bag and crushed them by hand and also by rolling over them with a full can from the pantry: a can of soup, peas, whatever, will work.
To spread the cooked caramel layer on the bottom layer of crackers, I sprayed a butter knife with some non-stick cooking spray, that made it easier to spread the caramel without it sticking to the knife. Also, refrigerate after topping with the chocolate to set it, and use a very sharp knife to cut into bars when completely cool and chocolate is set
