Pie crusts aren't just meant to be filled with fruit and sweet stuff. At least that is how most Amish cooks view pie. Have of chicken or pork? Put it into a pie! Have some beef, that works too! Especially when paired with carrots, potatoes, or peas. A homemade Amish beef pot pie is a classic Pennsylvania Dutch dish.
✅ Why Beef Pot Pie?
We aren't, by the way, talking about "pot pie soup", that is another Pennsylvania Dutch delicacy. No, we are talking about a savory, homemade crust filled with goodies. There are many reasons why these are popular:
- Easy to make
- Make a couple and you can easily feed a family of 8 or 9 people
- Good way to use a lot of stuff: meat, potatoes, veggies, and more. So perfect for using leftovers
- And who doesn't like pie?
📋 Step-By-Step Amish Beef Pot Pie
You can cheat and use a frozen, store-bought crust, or you can make your own, using our famous, easy Amish pat-a-pan pie crust.

Choose some good stewing beef, stick it in a skillet and then brown it.

After you have browned the beef, add potatoes and carrots.

You'll have enough meat, potato, and carrot mixture to fill a couple pie crusts. I'd make them 9 or 10-inch crusts. Also feel free to add whatever veggies you like during this step: corn, green beans, peas, and the like. Some Amish cooks add turnips.

Pack and pour it all into a pie crust.

Cover with a top crust and bake.

It really makes for a delicious dinner. Make sure you season with salt and pepper and whatever other seasonings you like!
