Doritos and Peanut Butter? Apparently, it is a thing.

🤢 Peanut Butter and Jelly Doritos?
I love peanut butter and jelly. And I love Doritos. I'm never quite sure whether I like the Cool Ranch or the original best, probably the original. They are so, so good. But I guess I am just not very adventuresome when it comes to pairing foods and that would make me a poor fit among the Amish.
I don't like my gravy to run into my beets or my green bean juice to dribble over onto my bread. I'm not neurotic about it, but that's why I love those little cafeteria-style divider dishes (so I guess I am not alone in liking to separate foods or they wouldn't manufacture those dishes).
In many Amish homes I have visited over the years the method at meal time is to eat everything out of a bowl. A bowl. Not a plate. A slope-sided bowl so there's very little hope of separating your cherry pie from your corn. It all just sort of slides to the bottom. I have a work-around which is to just eat one or two items at a time, but there is still mixing that occurs.
Gloria Yoder wrote the other week about an uncle that puts gravy over his cherry pie. Ugh. No, thanks.
❓ FAQ
Grape jelly is a great, versatile flavor that pairs well with the cheesy Doritos. But we like strawberry jam also.
You can use either, but creamy costrasts better with the crunch of the Doritos.
Yes, you can use peanut butter substitutes!
Sure, no rules here! If you are going to do this sandwich, then I doubt a Sun Chip and PB & J sandwich is that much of a stretch!
🖨️ Other Odd Food Pairings
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams in Columbus Ohio is well-known for mixing food flavors: care for some sweet corn ice cream alongside your wild lavender ice cream? Most of the time there the flavors pair together quite well, though, despite the way it sounds.
Odd food bedfellows are on my mind today because of a sandwich I saw my sister-in-law make over the weekend at a picnic: a peanut butter and jelly and Dorito sandwich. On one hand, it makes perfect sense. Eating some Doritos along with your sandwich seems perfectly reasonable. But Doritos in your sandwich? The thought of the Dorito dust mixing in with my jelly just doesn't do it for me. (then my mother-in-law promptly starts putting potato salad on some sandwich where it's presence would seem a no-no, I think it was a potato salad and cheese sandwich...) But, as the photo above show, it makes for an interesting-looking sandwich. Anyone else have any odd food pairings you'd like to share?

I'm with you, Kevin! There are some foods that mix together just fine. Guess it all depends on what style of meals one has grown up on. "Gravy on cherry pie"? No thanks! Blessings to you and the family, Carol

My husband likes crunchy peanut butter, grape jelly and bologna on white bread. My mom likes peanut butter, sandwich spread(kind of like tartar sauce) and purple onions. My favorite is a pretty plain chopped ham on white bread with mayo and Fritos. And I have a friend who likes egg sandwiches with grape jelly.

Blech, egg sandwiches with grape jelly??? ugh
Kevin

how about a hotdog minus the weiner with mustard, relish and potato chips ??
one of my cousins and I had a great time coming up with combos and then there was my brother who would have one item at a time on his plate to prevent anything from touching each other.

I Have always love to pile potato chips on my tuna or bologna sandwich. I like chips on ham or ham salad sandwiches too. Not as odd is a good peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Put peanut butter on the bread and wrap it around the dill pickle like a hot dog!

My Mom and Aunt used to make us weird Peanut butter and Jelly Sandwich too .. My aunt called it a Flintstones Sandwich Bologna and Jelly. I have had it too with Peanut Butter and Bologna.. or Peanut butter and cheese .. I think now as an adult it was just a way to give us something to eat with out whining of maybe cheese missing or Peanut butter missing etc. Fill the void and make it fun. I have also had omelettes with cream cheese and jelly Not sure where this came from of if its really a recipe someone made up but oddly enough its really good.

My dad always made us PB&J sandwiches, but we had doritos on the side not on our actual sandwich. We also always had dill pickles as a side with it, too. He continued the tradition with the grandkids as well. Now that they are grown, some still can't eat a PB&J any other way. Dad's recipe was standard creamy peanut butter with grape jelly on plain white sandwich 🥪 bread.

I like your Dad's PB&J, grape jelly and Doritos on the side!
