I remember when I first tried this recipe, I was skeptical, but, wow. I was not disappointed with Super Ham Sandwiches!
This is an amazing recipe. Okay, there are ham sandwiches and there are these Super Ham Sandwiches. I mean these sandwiches are in a league of their own. We like to make them with Kings Hawaiian bread but you can really use any bread. And, oh geez, I could eat an entire pan of these sandwiches. These are so, so good. Originally when we ran the recipe in the column we called them “sticky buns”, but that name didn’t seem overly accurate. I mean, when I think of a “sticky bun”, I think of a sweet breakfast bread. No, these are ham sandwiches in an amazing glaze and, yeah, they are just amazing.
In Amish kitchens, ham is not like chicken. Whereas chicken is plentiful in all its forms, the Amish will usually do an annual hog butchering and turn pork into chops, hams, bacon, gravies and more. But there's usually just not as much pork available as there is chicken. A chicken can just be wandering around the yard and then procured for supper. It's not like there are numerous hogs just waiting to be eaten. So while chicken is enjoyed for many meals throughout the year, ham is usually used a little more sparingly. Special occasions. It's not like the Amish usually use a ton of processed lunch meats.
So while most of us will make these Super Ham Sandwiches with slices of processed lunchmeat, most Amish would use thick slices of home ham and, wow, that would make them even better. So if you have access to that, use it! This recipe is definitely one of our favorites. You can read the original Amish Cook column that talked about this recipe here.
