Amish and Mennonite-run bulk food stores are cathedrals of bargains scattered across the United States. These stores are known for their incredibly low prices, unique products you can't find anywhere else, and a warm, friendly atmosphere that makes shopping feel like visiting neighbors rather than just another retail experience. (Well, not all Amish bulk food stores are alike — some ask for modest attire, others post a wall of shame for those who write bad checks — but most of the time, bulk food shopping is a fun experience!)

Amish homemakers have long bought in bulk, and there are many practical reasons for this. With such large families, a typical 2-pound bag of all-purpose flour isn't going to go very far. Even a 5-pound bag of Gold Medal flour won't cut it. So, historically, Amish homemakers have bought in bulk to create an economy of scale for their large families. To a large degree this tradition has continued to this day, but what has also happened is that the old Amish traditions have merged with the "Costco mentality" of America at large, so that Amish bulk food stores are popular not just with Amish people but with non-Amish as well.
You'll often find:
- Bulk baking supplies (flour, sugar, spices, cocoa, specialized ingredients like Clear-Jel)
- Discount groceries and closeouts (damaged boxes, overstocks, discontinued items)
- Homemade jams, jellies, and canned goods made by local families
- Local cheeses, meats, and deli items often sourced from nearby Amish farms
- Amish cookbooks, handmade goods, and more that you won't find in regular stores
This guide organizes Amish bulk food stores by state so you can easily find one near you. I've been to dozens and dozens of Amish-owned bulk food stores over the years, and I'll be updating this list regularly with new states and new stores, so be sure to bookmark it and check back often!
My Top 5 Favorite Amish Bulk Food Stores

Before we dive into the state-by-state listings, let me share my personal favorites from years of exploring these unique stores.
🏆 E&S Bulk Food Store — Shipshewana, Indiana
1265 IN-5, Shipshewana, IN 46565
This store sets the "gold standard" among Amish bulk food stores. It's an old-fashioned deli & market selling sandwiches & ice cream, plus bulk goods from candy to spices, and has grown into a sprawling mecca of bulk food choices on the south side of Shipshewana. You can find virtually anything and everything, and what really sets it apart, to my eye, is that you have throngs of Amish shoppers there. Even during some of the peak busiest times you often have half of the customers Amish, with buggies clogging the parking lot as much as cars. For me, the large Amish presence there is about more than "tourism aesthetics" — instead it ensures a true, authentic Amish cultural experience. The items stocked on the shelves at E&S are ones that the Amish use in their own homes, and that to me makes this store special.
💰 Payment: Cash or personal checks only
🏆 Fountain Acres Foods — Fountain City, Indiana
1140 Whitewater Rd, Fountain City, IN 47341
While Fountain Acre Foods can't match E&S in terms of "Amish ambiance," they beat E&S in accessibility. Interstate 70 is one of the busiest east-west routes in the USA and Fountain Acre Foods is located about 7 minutes north of the highway off of exit 151. The store is shaped after the energetic personality of its owner, Stevie Miller, who started the store from scratch over 10 years ago. You'll find aisles and aisles of bulk everything, along with a bakery and a deli.
🏆 Mission General Store — St. Ignatius, Montana
61307 Watson Rd, St. Ignatius, MT 59865
No other Amish bulk food store has what this one has: the gorgeous 15,000-foot Mission Mountains right outside their doorstep, and that is what makes this shopping experience one of a kind. Located in the Amish community of St. Ignatius, Montana, this fast-paced, bustling store shares a lot of the same traits as its more eastern cousins — except, well, you have these amazing mountains outside. Inside you'll find a whole range of bulk foods, baked goods, fresh doughnuts, and anything else you might need. Probably the best place anywhere west of Kansas to experience a true Amish bulk food store.
🏆 Mishler's Country Store — Dalton, Wisconsin
W5115 Barry Rd, Dalton, WI 53926
Okay, this store is in the middle of nowhere, but somehow I've managed to make it there twice over the years. I think what makes this store make my list is that it IS in the middle of nowhere — while there are plenty of non-Amish shoppers, you get this homey authenticity here. The store is not a sprawling emporium like E&S or Fountain Acres, but that smaller scale gives it real charm.
🏆 Berlin Bulk Foods — Berlin, Ohio
Berlin, OH (Heart of Holmes County)
This store is located in the heart of bustling, touristy Berlin, Ohio in Holmes County's Amish country. This store is not nearly as large as any of the others on the list and this place does tend to cater to the tourist trade more, but its small size also makes it kind of charming. They stock a lot of stuff for such a small place and I've met the Amish owners. Definitely a top-notch operation.
🏆 The Home Place - Georgetown, Ohio
One of my favorite Amish-Mennonite bulk food stores is only about an hour away from me, but life's craziness keeps me from going as often I would like. Hopefully, however, you can make it.
For people wanting an authentic Plain experience and are passing through southern Ohio near Brown County, The Home Place is an amazing Mennonite-owned bakery and bulk food store in Georgetown, Ohio, and it's absolutely worth a stop. I've made many sojourns to this store.
What to Expect at Amish Bulk Food Stores
- Pricing: Generally 20–50% less than regular grocery stores, especially on specialty baking ingredients
- Payment: Many are cash-only or cash/check only — always bring cash!
- Hours: Most close on Sundays; some close Wednesday afternoons for family/church activities
- Selection: Items you'll never find in regular stores, plus great deals on everyday staples
- Atmosphere: Friendly, unhurried, often with Amish customers shopping alongside you
Shopping Tips:
- Bring your own bags or boxes
- Don't be afraid to ask questions — the owners are usually very knowledgeable
- Try specialty items like Clear-Jel, Lemon Shine, or bulk vanilla
- Stock up on expensive spices — the savings are incredible
- Check expiration dates on sale items

You missed Beachy's in Arthur, IL -- always stop there when we are in the area. Love their selection.
Kevin
Good one, Linda...I have heard a lot of great things about Beachy's, but I have not actually been there which is why it didn't make the list, but thank you for calling them to our attention!
Kathy Grogg
We live about 30 miles from Shipshewana so I shop at E & S often. I love the selection of bulk spices. They are so much cheaper than any regular grocery. Of course we usually make a stop at Yoders Department Store and finish off by going a few more miles to Rise n Roll bakery.
Kevin
Ah, wow, Kathy you are lucky to live so close!
Paula T.
E&S Sales in Shipshewana, IN is a great store. Been there many times. I live about an hour & a half from Shipshewana an we try to go a couple times a year. But a word of warning before you go - they only accept cold hard cash. They do not take credit or debit cards or personal checks. I would recommend that store to anyone!
Kevin
Thank you for the warning, Paula....I think, it's been a couple of years since I've been there, that there is an ATM in the building (from the Mennonite credit union, lol, I think that is why I remember it), that said, yes, come with cash, good advice!
Kathy
They do take personal checks just no credit or debit cards.
Kevin
Thank you, Kathy, and Deb, for clarifying!
Deb
E & S will accept cash or personal checks.
Marie Harwood
Kevin, there is an awesome Amish store in the little bitty town of Cantril in southeast Iowa called the Dutchman's Store. They have tons of bulk foods and also many, many bolts of fabric in the dry goods section, all at wonderful prices. They also have other woodworking shops in the area. They are wonderful people. The men can be hired to move houses and of course do a fantastic job on other carpenter work. Marie Harwood
Kevin
Marie, the store in Cantril is one I would love to visit someday. I think that they are Mennonite-owned, not Amish, but just the same I've heard awesome things about the store and would love to go someday, thanks for checking in! - Kevin
Aimee
From your list, I've only been to E&S sales; love it. Beachy's Bulk Foods is great too!
Kevin
I need to make to Beachy's one of these days!
