LEAVING LANCASTER: I kind of get this. I have for years. I know the Amish have deep historical roots in Lancaster, but it just seems like the Amish population is too big there to be sustainable. Waves of Amish have moved elsewhere from Lancaster, but I forsee an absolute exodus at some point. There are just to many urban and suburban pressures from Philadelphia's exurbs pushing against the Amish country. So some Amish do think leaving is the best option. DANIEL YODER: Not Gloria's husband. This is a different Daniel Yoder. You know, 20 years ago this would have been unheard of, even among the New Order Amish. But, especially among New Orders, posed photography is not considered the taboo that it once was. There is an
Amish man, I believe he is New Order, named Daniel Yoder who lives in Ohio and he's been very successful in furniture and in one recent promotion he agreed to pose with a handcrafted desk. Unheard of 20 years ago. Today? Not as much....he an outlier for sure, but I have seen other New Order comfortably posing for photos. Click here to see Daniel Yoder's posed photo.
HEALTHY IN HOLMES: Most Amish eschew health insurance and instead pay into an "Amish aid" fund where they can help one another and it works pretty well (this is where there is a benefit to living in a large Amsih settlement, if you live in, say, Rexford, Montana's 10 family community, healthcare can be trickier). Anyway, click here to read about how the Amish handle healthcare in Holmes County, Ohio - interesting read!Â
I asked Millie if I could take a photo of her house and she graciously said "ok." This is a modern ranch, perfect for husband who suffered a stroke 10 years ago and still has some difficulty walking. Amish homes in Arthur are a mix of new ones like this built on subdivided farms and sprawling farmhouses that have been added onto and added onto and house multiple generations....
