Hot dogs are a popular processed and convenience food in Amish kitchens. The belief that all Amish cooking is organic, locally sourced, and healthy is definitely not rooted in reality. Yes, a lot of Amish cooking is locally sourced and fresh. But I have seen plenty of harried, stretched-for-time Amish moms open a can of soup or toss some hot dogs on the grill as a time-saver.

❤️ Why Hot Dogs Are Popular Among the Amish
Hot dogs are a popular food among the Amish, especially in certain situations. Here's why:
- cheap
- feed a crowd
- filling
- versatile
- Kid-friendly
I mean, what child doesn't like hot dogs? And many Amish gatherings have a lot of children in attendance, so that is an added bonus of dogs: kids love em,
📋 Step-by-Step Sloppy Joe Dogs
Well, my kids would have loved them. My youngest daughter did like them. I used veggie dogs for them since neither are meat-eaters and turkey franks for me. And my youngest like this. My oldest would have liked them, except I left some of the ingredients of the sauce out on the counter, and she saw the mustard. She doesn't like mustard so once she saw that, forget it. I tried to explain to her that the brown sugar would take the "bite" of the mustard flavor out, but that didn't cut the mustard with her. She thought, though, that it tasted like sloppy joe sauce on a hot dog and that is exactly pretty much what this is!

I used veggie dogs and turkey dogs for this dish. You can use whatever kind of dogs you want.

Saute some onion in butter and then add the rest of the sauce ingredients.

There is the dreaded mustard added before you stir it all up. My daughter insisted she could taste the mustard in the sauce, but I think the brown sugar balanced it out nicely and it had a very pleasant taste. Just make sure you stir it up plenty.

Split the dogs in half and then cover them in the sauce. You wouldn't have to split them, but that does all for more dog surface to be sauced up and that's the really good stuff in this recipe.

I paired the dogs with some rice, which I thought was a good choice. But obviously any veggie would go well with it or some fruit or both!
