Summers mean grilling out, like these delicious Amish Baked Barbecued Burgers.

This is especially true in Amish homes. Keep in mind, the vast majority of Amish do not have air-conditioning. There are some exceptions, believe it or not. There are some elderly Amish that live in modern homes with air-conditioning and electricity. Sometimes an elderly Amish person needs a home with electric because they are on oxygen. It's not terribly common, but you do see it.

The horrible heat that you have at the height of summer is often viewed as a health issue so I do know some elderly Amish that live in air-conditioned homes.

But the vast majority of them do not have air conditioning. And who wants to fire up an oven on a 100 degree day in July? Probably the most sweltering time I've every experienced in an Amish settlement as when we visited Ethridge, Tennessee once in June. Wow, that was hot. Another time, we went to Flat Rock, Illinois during summer and it was ghastly hot.

Such heat makes “summer kitchens “ popular among the Amish. Doing some cooking in a small sheltered area that opens to the outside helps drive the heat outside and not into the house. Another way to combat cooking heat is just to cook outside altogether. That is where cooking on the grill or an open fire is the answer.

So it’s not uncommon at all to drive to an Amish community on a warm summer day and see a grill fired up. Hamburgers are a popular summer supper because fixing them on the grill is so easy to do. But no one wants the same old boring burgers day after day, so there are many variations on the old stand-by.

Use fresh ground beef. Most Amish homemakers have access to their own home-sourced beef. Oats are something that are often added to burgers just to bulk them up a bit and make them hold together better. Ditto for the eggs.

All the ingredients work together well to form a flavorful, delicious mixture of meat and spices.

Form into thick patties after everything is all mixed for these Amish Baked Barbecued Burgers.

Cover and brush with this delicious barbecue sauce.

The burgers can be baked in the oven or flame-grilled outside on your grill. Either way, these will be delicious!

Top with whatever condiments you want, also lettuce, tomato, pickles, and cheese, the usual standards. The sauce is what really makes this burger pop.
