We have a wide assortment of Amish in the News this week, so let's just get right into it.
AMISH DOG BREEDERS PUSH BACK:Â Obviously, I abhor puppy mills. Â And, frankly, I'm not a "dog breed" guy anyway, I prefer an ol' mutt from the pound. Â I have a chow mix who is probably the most favorite dog I've ever had. But to each their own. Â If someone wants a Golden Doodle or whatever they are called, that's fine. Â I do think that some Amish dog breeders have gotten an unfair rap. Â Just because some Amish run brutal and horrible puppy mills doesn't mean all of them do. Â I know some very responsible, conscientious Amish dog breeders. Â When it comes to the Amish, people love to lump them into one category. Â The reality is that the Amish are a large, diverse group full of bad eggs and good eggs....Anyway, a group of responsible Amish dog breeders in Indiana are trying to get the public to quit stigmatizing them all. UNVACCINATED AMISH: Â Speaking of lumping the Amish all into one group......views on vaccinations vary widely from Amish settlement to Amish settlement and, in fact, from parent to parent. Â One New York state school is expressing concern about the unvaccinated Amish in their midst. Â Click here to read.
AMISH WOMAN VANISHES AND THEN IS FOUND:  I had never heard of Peoli, Ohio until I read an Amish dispatch from there in The Budget the other day.  I've heard of Paoli, Indiana, but not Peoli, Ohio. Turns out it is in the southern part of Tuscarawas County, along the growing edge of the huge Holmes-Wayne-Tuscarawas Amish area.  Anyway, this is just a bizarre story...I mean, really, this story illustrates that Amish people experience stress like anyone else...I mean, who hasn't felt like disappearing for a few days....but who actually follows through with it?  That is another matter....this Amish mom talked to her family and then just melted away into the woods for a few days with no supplies...sheesh, where did she sleep?  Seems like a very drastic solution to a personal problem. Click here to read more.
SIGH, LATEST UPDATE ON THE HORSE POOP SAGA: Â This bizarre saga continues to roll out in Kentucky. What a waste of taxpayer dollars and resources. Click here to read the latest.
MILLIE'S GRAPE & PINEAPPLE SALAD: Â Amish columnist Millie Otto (she is not affiliated with this site, she writes for a paper in Illinois) talks about wedding preparations in her family and shares an easy recipe for pineapple-grape salad. Click here for her column and recipe.
GERMAN BAPTIST BRETHREN ANNUAL MEETING ARTICLE: Â The local paper did an article about the German Baptist Brethren Annual Meeting that Rosanna has been so busy with....honestly, the article is pretty lackluster (this is a BIG event and it's being held in their backyard, you'd think they could have done a better article), Â but there are some interesting parts. Â Click here for the piece.
An Amish phone shanty destroyed by one of the bombs
PIPE BOMB BROTHERS: Â This is an awful story out of Pennsylvania. Although no one was injured in any of these attacks, it still must have been terrifying for the homeowners who discovered they had been attacked. Twin brothers detonated IEDs in Amish-owned phone shanties in a bombing spree throughout Lancaster County. Click here to read about this bizarre terror campaign.
