Amish in the News: Amish Project, Amish Burlesque, Benham Brothers, and More Emma Gingerich

    Published: May 9, 2014 · Updated: May 9, 2014 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

Okay, today's round-up has more of an "arts theme" to it.

THE AMISH PROJECT: I am familiar with the play "The Amish Project."  It's been around for years and I've never mentioned it on this site for the same reason the write of the article I am linking to was skeptical of the play.  It just seemed to play on a dark chapter in Amish history and I wasn't interested in it. But after reading this writer's review of "The Amish Project", maybe I was wrong.  Click here to read.

AMISH BURLESQUE:  Boy, this just does not sound like something that would be my cup of tea.  I think the humor I like is more subtle, dry, this just seems too over-the-top for me, but others might love it.  Haven't decided whether it's disrespectful to the Amish or not, that's difficult to assess without seeing it, but, I think I'm safe saying that I wouldn't like it. BENHAM BROTHERS:  While we are on the topic of media, was HGTV too quick to pull the plug on this show?  I'm not condoning their views at all (honestly, I've just read snippets, but what I've read are not something I'd agree with), but...it just seems like there is so much inconsistency and hypocrisy on TV...it's okay to totally fictionalize, trivialize and trample Amish traditions with shows like Amish Mafia and Breaking Amish, but someone expresses their own views and they get hammered.

EMMA GINGERICH:  I wrote about this young woman last weekend...I think this is a better article that explains her story.  It still say that it sounds like her story is more the result of a poor family dynamic than of anything in the Amish church as a whole. Just my opinion.
