Amish in the News: Tragedy in Ohio, Rise N Roll Rises, Amish Chicken Casserole, Miller's Closes, and More!

    By Kevin Williams

We'll begin this week Amish in the News with a tragic story: a buggy accident in Ohio claimed the life of a young Amish mother and left the rest of her family clinging to life.  I don't have any updates on the children's conditions this morning.  But you can read more about the accident here.

    Now, to some lighter stories:

MILLER'S DUTCH KITCH'N:    While most of the Amish restaurants in west Florida are clustered in the Pinecraft neighborhood of Sarasota, Miller's has always stood out as an amazing option for those in the Bradenton area.  I've been to Miller's several times and they have amazing food.  The restaurant has been a Bradenton mainstay since 1981 and I'm sad to see it go.  Click here to read more.

AMISH CHICKEN CASSEROLE:  Speaking of food, this is a recipe that appeared in The Fence Post this past week. The Fence Post is a nationwide agricultural newspaper reaching over 80,000 readers each week.  Looks like a hearty classic. Click here.

This is a box of Rise N Roll I picked up once at the original location.

RISE N ROLL RISES:  SIGH, I'm not being negative. I'm not. I swear.  If there were a Rise N Roll near me, I'd be there in a heartbeat and I'd probably gobble up every doughnut in sight.  And I am sure the doughnuts are delicious and this is a wonderful success story.  That having all been said, it is kind of sad to see something so rooted in Amish culture become so untethered from it.  There simply is no way that the quality of the doughnuts - which, again, I am sure are amazing and I'd eat one now - can be the same as when Orvin and Viola Bontrager started selling them out of their farmhouse using old family recipes.  Heck, maybe the doughnuts now are better, aided by the uniformity of mass production, but they aren't the same.  Click here to read about the latest location.

SPANISH AMISH:  Okay, Telemundo Chicago has a Spanish language article about the Amish.  I can't translate the page, for some reason, using Google translate.  So, since I don't speak Spanish, I have no clue what it is about.  But the pictures are interesting to look at.  Anyone speak Spanish? Click here.

MILLE'S BLUEBERRY CRUNCH BREAKFAST BAKE:  Man, this recipe sounds good! Check out Illinois Amish writer Millie Otto's latest and get an amazing recipe for this breakfast delight! Click here.
