All the Christmas trappings of lights and ornaments and brightly wrapped packages may receive short shrift from the Amish, but New Year's is another matter. Most Amish embrace the festive spirit of a New Year, often gathering with family and enjoying some munchies and fellowship as the countdown commences.
So I'll be posting some "party recipes" in the days ahead.
Check out these two recipes from an Amish woman in Indiana:
AMISH ONION DIP
1 /2 cup of mayonnaise
1 /2 cup of sour cream
2 tablespoons of milk
3 tablespoons of onion, grated
pinch of salt to taste
Mix all of the above ingredients well. Chill.
These "homemade punches" are surprisingly popular among the Amish. Just a blend of your powered package juices and other stuff, they've never been my favorite, but I'm sure this one is good. Some people jokingly call it "Mennonite wine."
LIME PUNCH
4 packages of lemon lime Kool Aid
3 cups of sugar
1 1 /2 quarts of Sprite
2 quarts of orange juice
3 quarts of water
1 quart of pineapple juice
Mix all together, except for the Sprite. Add the Sprite just before serving. Makes 2 gallons.
