    Sour Cream Apple Pie

    Published: Sep 16, 2013 · Updated: Feb 2, 2021 by Kevin Williams | 5 Comments

This is a delicious sour cream apple pie recipe that comes to us from the New Order Amish settlement of Lyndonville, New York.  This is a lush area rich in orchards not far from the shoes of Lake Ontario. As apple season ramps up, this is a great time to try this pie.  Rachel and I had some apples from a nearby orchard, so we put some into this pie.  We used "honeycrisp" apples, a delicious fruit which tastes a lot like its name.  This pie recipe uses sour cream, so it gives it a slightly custardy feel.  A really delicious pie for a crisp fall day!

    SOUR CREAM APPLE PIE

Makes 2 overstuffed 9 inch pies

8 to 10 medium-size apples (such as Ida Red or Golden Delicious), peeled and sliced

    2 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell

    4 large eggs, beaten

    1 ½ cups sugar

    ¼ cup all-purpose flour

    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

    2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

    ½ teaspoon salt

    2 cups sour cream</RI>

    Crumb Topping

    ¾ cup all-purpose flour

½ cup firmly packed brown sugar

    â…“ cup butter, softened

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the apple slices in the pie shell. Mix the eggs, sugar, flour, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and sour cream in a large mixing bowl. Pour the mixture into the pie shell over the apple slices.Make the crumb topping: In a small mixing bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and softened butter, using your fingers, until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Top the apple mixture with a generous layer of the crumbs. Bake for  60 minutes, until the pie is solid when jiggled.  Two pies in at the same time you may have to bake for 90 minutes.

This sounds delicious and looks amazing. You say it makes two pies, but it only calls for one pie shell. So do the amount of ingredients (apples, sugar, eggs, etc.) make one pie or two? Hope you can clarify that for me.
      Thanks 🙂

HI Kitty, just under 8 to 10 apples, it calls for (2) 9" pie shell. Hope this helps. sometimes some of the listings do not always show up. the rest of the ingredients are the same for two pies. can't wait to make this myself. Yummy

Hi, Kevin. The recipe sounds good, but the directions are potentially confusing. There is a note for "two overstuffed 9 inch pies", but the recipe calls for just one 9 inch pie shell. It will also make a difference if people use frozen pie shells; the regular ones are shallow and would most likely result in two pies per the proportions in this recipe. Can you clarify? Thanks.

I originally had erroneously posted 1 pie shell, but I changed it!:) Yes, you are right...the frozen pie shells are shallower, if you are going to use store-bought I would plan on making either 3 pies or halving the ingredients and making 2 shallower pies...

Hello Kevin! The only thing i see is wrong with this recipe is the piecrust! With a Amish recipe you MUST make the Amish Pie crust like the Amish and not buy the pie shell in the store or it is not a Amish Apple Pie !! What i been using for years and it is the best Piecrust anybody ever can make to get the best pies!
