We have an interesting assortment of stories and recipes on Blogroll this week, so let's get right to it!
Coke cake....mmmmmmm, how could you go wrong with this? Answer: you can't.
COCA-COLA CAKE: I couldn't resist posting this. Not an Amish recipe per se, but Patricia on the Patchwork Quilt blog posted this recipe for "coca cola cake". I just posted a recipe for coca-cola pie a few weeks ago,but this cake looks amazing and, hey, it's Coke, so I had to post it. SIGH, my daughter Bea, whenever she sees the Coke logo anywhere pipes up and says "Daddy's Coke." Great. It's cute...I need to try to capture it on video and post it here to share. Anyway, yeah, how can you go wrong with Coke Cake? Take a look at the recipe
COKE SALAD: Check out THIS recipe...click here. Man, once Lent is over, I'll be trying this one!

AN ODD AMISH PHOTO SHOOT: First of all, I want to be clear: I am in no way doubting this blogger's account, the authenticity of her work, etc. Okay? As someone who has chronicled Amish culture for almost 30 years something rings weird about the wonderful photos posted by Karen Pulfer Focht. I will say that the Amish views about photography have relaxed considerably over the past 30 years. I notice a definite difference. The relaxation, though, has generally occurred among the most progressive groups of Amish. The Amish in this photo - from the buggy, anyway - appear pretty conservative. Notice no orange safety triangle on the buggy? Father and son out on a buggy ride? The father looks like he just joined the church, or just married, maybe in his early or mid-20s and the boy looks like his is in his early teens almost. But the strangest thing of all is the pose. Even the most progressive Amish will rarely just post for a photo. I have seen it happen. But a pose photo is usually among the most liberal New Order groups or a handful of Old Order groups in Michigan and Maine. Yet the father and this son are clearly posing for a shot. I could visit Amish communities for weeks and never be granted permission to take a shot like that. So the photographer either just got lucky (it happens) or she had cultivated some true trust with them. I'm not sure. Again, in no way doubting the photographer. But it's just odd. If I find out more information, I'll post. Click here to see the photos. What do you think?
AMISH MACARONI SALAD: Ah, summer...and few dishes say summer like Amish mac salad. Click here for the recipe.
HOMEMADE AMISH PANCAKES: I'll share this recipe. SIGH, you know...to do the type of food photography seen on a blog like this. I'm just so far from it. I appreciate you all sticking with me all these years without the artistic food images. I'm trying to do more and more of them. But bloggers like this one make it look easy (trust me, it's not) and that's probably why their blog gets a lot more traffic than this one (don't know that for sure, just a guess). Click here for a great Amish pancake recipe from Taste of Lizzy T's.
SUGAR COOKIE BARS: Man, when I saw the pancake recipe from Taste of Lizzy T's I was more captivated by the "Sugar Cookie Bars." They look absolutely amazing. Click here to see the sugar cookie bars and get the recipe.
