This has to be one of the most creative buggies I have ever seen, I stumbled upon it in the small Amish settlement of Flat Rock, Illinois. I posted a photo of this on the old website, but I know we have lots of new visitors so I thought I would post it again.
This is actually a golf cart that was bought by an elderly Amish man and then modified to become a "buggy." He gutted the insides of all electronic components, painted it black, and added buggy shafts. The results is a souped up golf cart/buggy hybrid. The man explained the advantage of the golf cart is that he and his wife can avoid the bone-cracking climb up into a buggy. And having done it numerous times, I will concur that it can be quite a climb even for the limber. This is something you can just step right in, although the low ride ensures forward view is somewhat blocked by the horse, so you just enjoy the scenery to the sides.
The golf cart buggy has proven so popular that the man actually has orders for several more.

So.......do some settlements allow rubber tires?
Kevin
Keith, yes...some settlements do...the more conservative ones tend not to, more progressive seem to allow it...it varies widely and wildly!

I think this is a great idea... Good for the

That is an unusual buggy! Thanks for sharing Kevin.

They should put a convertable top on that buggy for bad weather and sun. I would pay to take a ride in it!

Use 2 or 4 miniature horses to be able to see ahead of you.

In the Old Order German Baptist Brethren community there was a man who built a special buggy. It was low to the ground made with motorcycle wheels and tires and it was mean to transport a number of people. You stepped into it from the back, or short step and it seated maybe 8 people, four on each side.

I thought they weren't supposed to use tires. ?????
Kevin
Judy - Welcome! Rubberized tire usage varies from settlement to settlement, some Amish communities do use them on their buggies, others don't...just depends on how conservative the settlement is and Flat Rock is not really all that conservative. - Kevin

Thank you for posting this. I happen to live in Flat Rock, although their settlement is actually about 10 miles from where I live. I wonder if this is near the Amish store? I'll have to keep a close lookout next time I drive in that area.
Kevin
Welcome, Susan...aren't you lucky, I LOVE the Flat Rock Amish settlement. And, yes, this was very close to the Amish store, so keep an eye out for golf cart buggies!:)

The have similar ones in Northern Indiana in the more liberal districts in the 4 wheel version, same tires but a small wagon body.

Looks like it could tip very easy and can't turn to short ... shaft will hit cart .
