Mothers occupy a central spot in Amish cultures ( like most). The typical Amish mom is responsible for tending to the children and all that goes on with that: sewing, cooking, laundry, being a nurse, a teacher, and a referee. Amish moms send out the Christmas cards, gather the Sunday clothing, and often take charge of paying the bills.
Yes, for an Amish Mother the day is never dull and almost always full. And often an Amish Mom's day starts well before the sunrises and ends well after the last blush of light has sun below the western horizon. And most Amish Moms would say they'd do it all again if they could.
Amish society is definitely very gender pigeonholed but, for most, it works well for them and they wouldn't want it any other way. If they do want it another way, then leaving the church becomes an option to consider.
