Over the years, I have noticed that the Amish love their snack mixes. These mixes can consist of all sorts of stuff, bought or homemade.

📋 What is in An "Amish Snack Mix"?
You can find all sorts of things in an Amish-made snack mix, but here's a brief run-down:
- homemade cereal
- granola
- chocolate chips
- graham cracker pieces
- Cheerios

❓ How To Make Dill-Ranch Snack Mix

This is super easy to make and there is a lot of latitude and leeway. I generally stuck with the recipe. I generally stuck with savory cereals (although Honeycomb is slightly sweet) and flavors. I couldn't get myself to put in Cheetos as was suggested. At the very least, though, that would have added a color pop.

The Amish Cook had this advice with the snack mix: Daniel's family introduced us to the idea of dumping all snacks into a plastic trash bag. It is much easier to mix this way, especially if you are making a big batch. It is best after a day or two as the seasoning flavors blend into the snacks.
I resisted that idea at first but then thought: why not? So I bought a small trash bag and mixed it all together in there. Don't, though, accidentally buy a scented trash bag! I almost accidentally did and I don't want my snack mix tasting like Fabuloso or Fabreeze!
The only qualm I have about the plastic trash bag (besides scented ones) is that the dressing runs down over the snack mix and pools on the bag. I'd think a big glass bowl you'd get less on the bowl and more in the mix. Anyway, if you go the plastic trash bag route, just make sure you mix plenty well.

Hi Kevin: I have a question about the recipe info. I am not sure what you mean by this: 10 quarts snacks? What should the amount of each thing you want to put in for the snack mx. Do we just put the entire box of cereal or the entire back of something that we want to use ?? or is there a number of cups of each that we need to measure with. I love your recipes , and thanks for the nice stories that you share.

Thanks, Alanna, yes, that 10 quarts is an awkward measurement. There are 4 cups in a quart, so this means 40 cups of crunchy stuff!! That is a lot. I admit I just sort of guesstimated...I didn't want 40 cups of snack mix to eat, so I used probably closer to 20 - 25 cups, but still used the same amount of seasoning/dressing, and it was good...I just tried to have equal rations of Cheerios, pretzels, bugles, etc...Hope this helps! It is good tasting and you can't really go wrong with any adjustments you make!

Make sure your garbage bags are not scented! I ordered unscented ones but they still smell like perfume. It's really weird.
But this does sound good. For Christmas holiday get-togethers I usually always make Puppy Chow because my youngest son has loved that stuff since he was about 6 years old. I make the savory snacking stuff for Thanksgiving get-togethers.

When I saw the idea to mix the recipe in a garbage bag, red flags went off for me. I've always heard that they are not safe for food storage. Here's a short answer from the FDA's website:
"Can I cook or store foods in a trash bag?
Jul 3, 2024
Knowledge Article
No. The use of plastic trash bags for food storage or cooking is not recommended because they are not food-grade plastic and chemicals from them may be absorbed into the food." Be careful!

Thanks for that Georgene, I'm not thrilled about the garbage bag tip either....I mean, I think if you are ONLY using it to mix the snack mix and then dumping it and storing it in another container, you are probably okay, but I would NOT store it in the garbage bag.
