Most Amish cooks keep a supply of homemade pizza sauce on their pantry shelves — jars lined up and ready to open year-round. The sauce usually begins with the plump tomatoes they grow right in their gardens. A handful of herbs and spices gives it that signature pizza-parlor zing, and before long, a hearty Amish pizza is ready for the table.

Pizza holds a special place in the Amish culinary world. It’s fun, inexpensive, and perfect for feeding a large family. Kids often get in on the action, sprinkling cheese and toppings while the warm smell of baking crust fills the kitchen. In many Amish homes, Friday night pizza is a cherished tradition — a comforting end to a long week of work, school, and chores.
A Slice of Memory: The Night Pizza Was Delivered to an Amish Home
I still remember visiting an Amish family back in the 1990s, right around the dawn of the cell-phone era. They were talking about how rare and exciting pizza delivery was for them. Without a phone in the house, they usually had to walk down the road to a little phone shanty just to place an order.
Thinking I was being helpful — and maybe a bit “cool” — I pulled my early cell phone out of my pocket and offered to call for pizza. The children’s eyes widened as I made the call right from the kitchen. Looking back now, I’m amazed I even got a signal in that rural area; I can barely get one in my own home 30 years later.
The delivery driver was equally surprised to find himself navigating dark country roads to an Amish farmhouse, headlights cutting through the night. But he found us, pizza in hand — and that evening, surrounded by laughter and the smell of melted cheese, we enjoyed one of the most memorable pizza suppers I’ve ever had.
Why Homemade Pizza Sauce Is Still the Best
Even with modern conveniences, there’s still nothing better than making your own Amish-style pizza sauce. It’s rich, flavorful, and deeply personal — every cook adds their own touch, whether it’s extra oregano, a pinch of red pepper, or a little more garlic.

Once you try this recipe, you might never go back to the jarred stuff again.
