Amish Pizza
The Amish have had a long love-affair with pizza. You’d think pizza and the Amish would be worlds apart, but if you think about it, pizza has all the ingredients that appeal to Amish cooks: homemade bread (crust), pizza sauce (tomatoes from the garden), and all the toppings (from their supply of meat or garden-grown veggies).
I remember, sometime in the mid-90s, ordering a pizza for an Amish family using my cell phone, which was then an exotic novelty. The nearest pizzeria was flummoxed, because they were not accustomed to getting orders from Amish homes. But for the Amish family I was visiting, pizza delivery was a royal-like treat.
Fast-forward 20 years and cell phones are no longer a novelty even for the Amish and pizzerias do a booming business in Amish communities. While the Amish do like delivered pizza, I’ve also enjoyed plenty of homemade pizzas in Amish homes, whether they be breakfast pizzas, fruit pizzas, dessert pizzas, veggie pizzas, or traditional.
