This recipe is for "upside-down pizza." It is a hearty, substantial dish for a cold winter's day, of which we have had many lately. This is a great meal to serve at a party, for a winter Super Bowl gathering or an after-church potluck. It's very substantive and easy to serve.
Pizza is a food that really enjoys a great deal of adoration among the Amish. I can remember years and years ago visiting an Amish family in Indiana. This was in the early days of cell phones when having one was still a novelty. I was visiting an Amish family and they were commenting on how much they liked pizza. So I casually pulled my phone out of my pocket - they were stunned having never seen that before - and suggested I call to order a pizza. So I did and the pizza place was just as surprised because the address I gave them to deliver was one they didn't usually get calls from.
And we all enjoyed our pizza that night. But, now, fast forward to today, and many, many Amish have cell phones of their own. So that is a big change. But one thing that hasn't changed is the Amish love for pizza.
Not just pizza, but "pizza-fied" foods from pizza muffins to pizza bread to pizza loaf and pizza casseroles. Just about anything can have a twist of pizza added.
This "upside-down pizza" really is what it says, it's a pizza turned upside-down with sort of a casserole type texture and flavor. This is such a good meal.
I love this photo that I took once outside of Shipshewana, Indiana. It sort of illustrates in a single snapshot the ongoing Amish love affair with pizza.

This looks like a must try as my kids and grandkids love pizza. Mushrooms black olives and pepperoni would be a must for them. I am thinking garlic salt and italian seasoning would also add flavor.
