Amish Apple Dumplings
By Kevin Williams
We are in apple season now, which means fresh cider, tart pies, and, yes, homemade apple dumplings. As an aside, I think the first movie I ever saw in a theater was a Disney movie called "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again." My Dad was a good sport, taking my brother and I to movies that probably wouldn't have been his first choice. I'm not sure whether it was that movie or "The Cat From Outer Space" that was my first. I remember more of Cat From Outer Space, so I'm think Apple Dumpling was my first. Oh well, tangent aside, I have this superb recipe from John Mast, an Amish man in Vanceburg, Kentucky. He was nice enough to share the recipe with us. Perfect for fall! Another aside, the recipe seems pretty straight forward, but I am not sure what "flaky crust flour" means...perhaps one of our readers can give some guidance?
- 6 apples cut in half
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups "flaky crust flour"
- 2 /3 cup butter
- 2½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 /2 cup milk
- Sauce:
- 3 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 3 cups water
- 3 /4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Mix dry ingredients. Cut in butter and add milk.
- Roll out dough 1 /8 thick.
- Cut into squares and wrap a half an apple in each square, pinching the corners together.
- Place on baking sheet and add syrup.
- Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until done.
- Serve with ice cream or milk

I tried googling Flaky Crust Flour and I'm thinking it might be a store brand...perhaps someone local milled the flour under that name...?

Could be, Virginia, not sure...but thanks for checking, I've been so time-strapped lately it's been tough to do "deep digging" on anything!
