    Amish Cherry Pudding

    Published: Feb 11, 2021 · Updated: Feb 11, 2021 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

Cherries and Valentine's Day seem to go hand-in-hand. Perhaps it is the proximity to Valentine's Day and George Washington chopping down a cherry tree. Or, more likely, it's just the ruby red luscious cherries tie in well with Valentine's Day's colors and sweetness.

This is a cherry pudding that is popular in Amish homes this time of year. SIGH, when I hear "pudding", I think of a refrigerated container of Swiss Miss creamy pudding that you eat out of a small single-serving plastic container with a spoon. Man, I love those types of puddings. But pudding in the wider sense is different than that. A lot - but not all - of the Amish pudding recipes I run in to are baked so that the final productr is more like cake than custard.

Adding to the confusion is some British definitions of pudding are wildly different than what pudding means in the United States.

So, this is an Amish cherry pudding recipe. We made it with canned cherries. The original recipe called for 1 cup of pitted cherries, it didn't say whether canned, fresh, or frozen was preferable. I bought a can of pitted cherries and drained them. I think, though, well...more cherries in this recipe would probably work wonders. It was good, really good, but it would have been really great with more cherries, so I have upped the amount in the recipe below.

    🍒 Amish Cherry Pudding Ingredients

    • ½ cup sugar
    • ¼ cup butter
    • 2 tsp. baking powder
    • 2½ cups flour
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 ½ cups cherries, pitted
    • 1 egg

    📋 Pudding Instructions

    1. Cream together the butter and sugar and add the egg then beat well.
    2. Sift the flour and baking powder and add alternately with the milk.
    3. Blend well, flour the cherries and stir in.
    4. Pour batter into a baking dish. Bake for a half-hour at 350 degrees.
    5. Top with whipped cream or regular cream.
