Plain City, Ohio does have a rich Amish culinary past, hence the proliferation of Dutch-type restaurants which used to populate the area. While I was in Der Dutchman yesterday I also grabbed a batch of chocolate peanut butter cookies (sitting there lonesomely among the monster cookies, snickerdoodles and iced Russian shortbread??) While I am not sure about the Russian shortbread, the chocolate-peanut butter cookies are a classic Amish confection. Look at these beauties! And, yes, they taste as good as they look...a cookie about the size of a small saucer and it is soft and sweet. Here is a recipe for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies that comes to me from an Amish woman in Ohio.
- 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
- ½ cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- ⅓ cup cocoa
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- Optional:
- ½ cup miniature chocolate chips
- ½ cup peanut butter chips
- Begin by combining peanut butter and oil in a large mixing bowl.
- In another bowl, add brown sugar and white sugar; mix well.
- Add in eggs and vanilla; mix well again.
- Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.
- Add in the peanut butter and oil mixture.
- Mix until blended (the dough will be sticky). Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Drop the dough onto balls on ungreased cookie sheets and flatten with a drinking glass.
- Bake at 350 for 12 - 15 minutes.

Recently joined your newsletter. I am trying how to get the peanut butter dough in the center of these cookies. The recipe said to blend but then the middle wouldn't be the peanut butter. Could you let me know the right way to make these? Thanks.

I have been making the Amish peanut butter cookies for years. Everyone loves them. I don't know about the chocolate peanut butter ones. I will have to try them. They sound great.
