Homemade bug traps on an Amish farm
Below is a homemade bug trap recipe that I got from an Amish woman in Indiana. It really does work. Well, it works at drawing bugs into the trap, now, whether it really reduces the bug population in a particular area or whether new bugs just rush in to fill the void is above my paygrade. But it does work. The Amish woman always used green soda bottles, like 7-Up or Sprite. Not sure whether there was a strategic reason for it, whether that just happened to be the soda she drank, or whether it was aesthetics...not too appealing to see a bunch of trapped bugs in a clear bottle.....anyway, here is the "recipe."
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup vinegar
- 1 or 2 banana peels
- water
- Pour sugar and vinegar into the bottle and stuff in banana peels. Fill bottle half way with water. Discard bottle cap, Use string to hang from a low tree branch.
