Amish in the News: Amish & Covid-19, Millie Otto, and More!

It is not surprising that many of the Amish stories in the news are COVID-19 related.  I think that will be the case for a while still, but I'm trying to find the most interesting information out there to share:

AMISH NOT KEEPING DISTANCE:  Frankly, what has surprised me the most is how well the Amish have, as a rule, adhered to government mandates requiring social distancing, canceling church and school, etc.  I was not expecting as much cooperation, simply because the Amish tend to have a very strong go-your-own-way streak.  But a county official in western New York - without offering much detail - says that the Amish there are not adhering to social distancing.  Click here.

large gatherings are a way of life among the Amish, but most seem to be adhering to new guidelines.

COPS BUST AN AMISH PARTY:  This is more of what expected, but there hasn't been a ton of this...a party by Amish teenagers in Geauga County, Ohio attracted over 100 people and resulting in the police coming and breaking it up. Click here to read more.

NEW YORK TIMES VISITS AMISH COUNTRY:   An interesting first-person account from a New York Times reporter about her difficulty doing a story in Amish country.  She started her journey to Amish country at the home of David Kline, an Amish bishop and author whom I have visited before.  Too bad she couldn't take him up on his offer to stay at their farm. This sign was on the door at the home nearby Millie's, but it wasn't Millies house. I was mistaken, but the people here knew where Millie lived and directed me. Otto is a VERY common Amish last name here.

MILLIE OTTO:  Check in with Amish columnist Millie Otto this week.  Geez, her recipe is "Ritz Cracker Cookies"   Her recipes often just don't sound that appealing to me, even if you replaced the dates in this recipe with something else, I have my doubts...Click here to read the column and the recipe.

AMISH ROMANCE NOVELS KEEP ON SELLING:  This is a profile from the CBC about an Alberta resident who has written a lot of Amish romance novels.  I don't know, I've never read one...one of these days, maybe I will...but I doubt middle-aged men are the target audience. Click here to read more.

AMISH NO-KNEAD MILK BREAD:  This Amish-style recipe was published in the Washington Post this week. Click here to see.
