OUTSIDER:  SIGH....just not into Amish fiction.  In fairness, as subscribers of my newsletter know, I'm having trouble getting into any kind of book right now.  It's frustrating.  Linda Castillo does have a following and, I have to admit, this review about Castillo's book, Outsider, almost enticed me.  Sounds like an interesting, if mindless summer reading, story. Witness

    Happy 35th birthday, Witness!

REVIEWING WITNESS:  Not sure why a newspaper decided to review Witness, which was released in 1985.  Wow.  Oh, wait, never mind, I know why...there are no new movies being made or released, so, yeah, we have to resort to reviewing decades-old movies.  But, wow, Witness was a classic so I am always happy to revisit it and this review does it justice. This sign was on the door at the home nearby Millie's, but it wasn't Millies house. I was mistaken, but the people here knew where Millie lived and directed me. Otto is a VERY common Amish last name here.

MILLIE'S ZUCCHINI PANCAKES:  Hmmmm,  this sounds really good, but would you eat it?  To me, pancakes aren't pancakes unless you can put syrup on them, and, well, I mean, I guess there is no rule saying you couldn't put syrup and butter on these.  What do you think?   Click here to check in with Millie Otto's latest and recipe.

HUTTERITE COLONIES LOCKDOWN:  Two Hutterite colonies in Manitoba have locked down.  Not surprising that once COVID found its way onto a colony that it would spread. Hutterite colonies are very communal, often full of elderly residents, so it's not a great combination.  Click here to read more.

    Introducing OLD ORDER MENNONITE MEMOIRS:

I try to showcase the best of plain writing on the site by bringing you Gloria every week and linking to Millie Otto's weekly My Amish Home and Sarah Miller’s Amish Corner monthly column. But I was so excited to find another Plain writer that somehow has been writing for the past year and I only just discovered it. Her name is Roseanne Zimmerman and she writes for a small Pennsylvania newspaper called the Morrisons Cove Herald.  Now, I have been in the newspaper business for 30 years, and I thought I had heard of about every paper, but somehow I have never heard of this paper or even this town.... It’s a very high-quality column. She seems to be an older woman who has grown children.   I think what I like about this column is that she is older and Mennonite, so it gives us weekly insight into a completely different church. Yes, there are a lot of similarities between them and the Amish, but there are many differences and this column will give us a chance to flesh out of those differences. So I’m super excited to start being able to link to this once a week.  Check out this week's installment of Mennonite Memoirs.

    An Old Order Mennonite farmhouse.

And, geez, there are over 70 back columns to link to here...how the heck did I miss this???

I find her writing style to be very accessible, sprinkled with the wisdom of somebody who’s lived a while. I just think it gives us good contrast, hearing from somebody who’s an older Mennonite and Gloria, who writes the Amish Cook, gives us the perspective of a young mom, and I think that’s an equally valuable perspective
