Amish in the News: Maryland Amish Scenes, Daviess County Roads, Millie's Corn Relish and More!

We have a lot of interesting stuff in today's Amish in the News, so I won't waste anymore time:

RURAL MARYLAND AMISH:  This piece interests me for a variety of reasons.  Number one, it's the Washington Post.  They ran a pictorial spread today of Amish communities in Maryland.  Interesting that they decided to do that.  But, geez, call me uncultured when it comes to art, but the photos are in black and white...that was kind of disappointing...I know, I know, it's art and black and white can be more vivid blah, blah, blah....yes, I do agree, that sometimes black and white can evoke some power, but in this case I didn't think it worked.  We see the world in color, not black and white (well, I know some people who only see it in black and white but that is another topic) and this photo spread could have been so vivid if in color.  What do you think?  Interesting how they kept referring to "three Amish communities" in Maryland, but no photos were from Oakland in the state's far, far west.  Anyway, click here for the photo spread.

Paved roads like this in Daviess County get heavy wear and tear from horse hooves.

INDIANA ROADS:  This is an interesting story on several levels.  Daviess County officials are complaining about wear and tear on the roads from horse-drawn buggies (mainly the horse-shows).  Well, this article really gives insight into Amish problem solving.  It seems like the Amish are bending over backwards to come up with a solution.  You know, though, the one argument I did not see addressed was a "reverse one."  Yes, the county spends a lot of money on road upkeep, but I wonder how much money the Amish bring into the county in tourism dollars?  While I don't know for sure, my guess is that it far outweighs road upkeep  .but good for the Amish for wanting to work with the county officials.   Click here to read more.

DAILY BONNET:   SIGH, I must sometimes come across as so humorless and dour and I don't mean to. I DO love to laugh and if you really get me, I can roar with laughter.  But I tend towards dryer humor, I think.  I don't think this site is in poor taste, but I just don't think the humor does a lot for me.  I guess as a journalist if I am going into something knowing its satire, then why read it in the first place?  I don't know....just not my type of humor. But this site came to my attention when a satirical story when viral because people thought it was real:  Mennonite biker gang confronts Hells Angels in Sturgis, South Dakota.  I thought the last sentence of the story was ind of amsuing, but the rest was just "meh."  It could have been funnier....The Daily Bonnet is full of such satire.

HUTTERITE COLONY SETTLES SUIT:  Man, this is a horrible story on so many levels, definitely insightful as to the Hutterites. Click here to read.
