Let's check out what Amish stories are in the news this week.
NEW YORK MEASLES: A new law prohibiting religious exemptions from vaccines is taking place in New York state and that has many outside health experts worried about how to get the Amish to comply. The Amish, though, have generally been fairly receptive to public health campaigns, so I'm not expecting too much resistance. Click here to read more.
RISE N ROLL RISES: The northern Indiana mainstay, founded by an Amish family, continues to expand through franchising. A new location has opened in Plymouth, Indiana. I am sure the doughnuts in the franchised locations are amazing, I'd probably be first in line. Still, you simply can't replicate the flavor of doughnuts being hand-made and sold from the front porch (as the original doughnuts were) in a mass-produced format. You just can't. Does that mean the mass produced ones aren't amazing too? No, but they wouldn't be the same....anyway, I'll stop my rant. Click here to read more.
Happy 34th birthday, Witness!
Kelly McGillis starred opposite Harrison Ford in Witness
VISIT THE WITNESS FARM: Man, I'd do this in a heartbeat if I could....so if you can, do it! The original farmstead featured in the movie Witness will be open to a special tour this weekend. The Harrison Ford Amish-themed drama first came out in 1985 but I think it has held up very well over the years. Read more about this chance to tour the farm here.
CREAMY RED POTATO SALAD: Okay, not an Amish recipe, more Italian, but potato salads are such a part of Amish summer culinary culture, I happened to stumble upon this one and it sounds so good that I thought I'd share! Check out this creamy red potato salad for your summer!
MILLIE'S CREAMY STRAWBERRY DESSERT: Wow, this sounds good. Check out the latest from Millie Otto, Illinois Amish columnist. Her recipe this week is creamy strawberry dessert. Click here.
SARA MILLER'S AMISH CORNER: This is a monthly column written by an Amish woman in the Geauga County, Ohio Amish settlement (the fourth largest in the world). No recipe with her writing, but she provides a fun window into Amish culture. Check out her latest writing here.
