The Amish do incorporate a fair amount of fish and seafood into their diets. This is more true in some communities than others. The Amish, for instance, of Delaware are very close to the ocean and therefore have a lot of seafood in their diet. There are avid Amish fisherman there, and with the ocean being so close, many Amish anglers take advantage of deep-sea charters.

The Amish elseswhere fish with what’s available. There are plenty of lakes in Minnesota, for instance, for the Amish there to cast their lines. In the south, it’s all about catfish.
The Amish of Montana are much more likely to fly fish in the many streams in the area, and go after the abundant salmon that live in some nearby rivers. So recipes like salmon patties and salmon loaf are popular in the Amish community year-round, not just during the Lenten season, which they don’t really observe.
And if one’s favorite fishing hole is frozen over, usually that isn’t a problem either, ice fishing is very popular among the Amish!
❓Fishy FAQs
It depends very much on where the Amish community is located. The Amish of Ethridge, TN and Pontotoc, Mississippi fish the southern streams for the biggest catfish! The Amish in Delaware and Pinecraft, Florida are deep sea fishing enthusiasts. You might red snapper or swordfish on some Amish menus.
And out west, salmon is king!
For Amish that don't live in the West with its abundant mountain streams, store-bought canned salmon is available in most Amish bulk food stores as are cans of tuna, usually.
You can see the recipe calls for cracker crumbs, my parents improvised and flavorized by swapping them out with Italian bread crumbs. You can do the same, or experiment with various crackers like Ritz or Club.
Use a canned soup and milk for the sauce. Cream of shrimp can be a difficult flavor to find on store shelves, so you can swap it out for cream of chicken or mushroom.
Pack the salmon into a loaf pan. You should get a nice, dense loaf.
When the loaf is out of the oven, good and golden, spoon the sauce over the top of the loaf. Then slice and serve!
The salmon loaf pairs well with green beans or maybe some fruit.
A green bean and potato mix with some seasoning is also a near-perfect side dish.
