Amish Casseroles
Casseroles are French in origin, but they are Amish in spirit. Perhaps no meal is more suited to Amish culture than the casserole. Amish cultural customs are centered around family and gathering. With family are the bricks, food is the mortar and cement that holds those bricks together. And when you are dealing with as many bricks as the Amish, you need a lot of cement and casseroles deliver.
Casseroles are perfect for Amish culture in that they can be quickly, easily, and flavorfully thrown together, can feed large quantities of people, and the leftovers do quite well. The casserole really is the perfect meal to fill the stomachs of a farmhouse full of people. Casseroles are as versatile as the Amish communities they are found in. There are breakfast casseroles like our authentic Barn-Raising Breakfast Casserole and then there are hamburger casseroles, turkey casseroles, chicken casseroles, pork casseroles (check out the amazing Underground Amish Ham Casserole), venison casseroles, vegetable casseroles, and on and on.
So, if you want to bring the authenticity of the Amish to your supper table, grab a deep pot, a serving spoon, and your imagination, the sky’s the limit when it comes to casseroles!
