    Easy Skillet Chicken Dressing

    Published: Jun 16, 2021 · Updated: Jun 16, 2021 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

This Easy Skillet Chicken Dressing is a recipe an Amish woman in Hardin County Ohio gave me recently. It iso simple, so delicious. But what was interesting to me is that she home-cans the stuffing ingredients ahead of time so that all she has to do, really, is have some leftover bread to put in a skillet and drump the stuffing in it heat up, and you have an instant meal. It really is a clever way to save time.

I have never heard of having home-canned dressing. This dish when you have everything prepared like she did, literally just takes minutes to make. But even if you don’t have it assembled preassembled like she did, it’s still really easy. And this type of dish is just so typical of Amish cooking. It’s simple, yet filling and fun.

This Easy Chicken Dressing ia great way to use some store-bought bread that is a little past its prime but hasn’t yet molded. Or you can make a loaf of homemade bread just for this recipe. Personally, I think cornbread would be good too. The Amish woman toasts her bread in the oven lightly before she puts it in the skillet and mixes it with everything. But I didn’t do that and you don’t have to do that.

If this stuffing were the centerpiece of a larger meal, you'd have it with some green beans on the side or perhaps some fruit. Definitely an easy, but filling, meal.

    Toasting Bread

This is bread toasting in the Amish woman's outdoor oven, helps keep the heat out of the inside of the house during warmer months.

    Easy Amish Chicken Dressing

This was just so clever, a pre-made, home-canned dressing "mix" so that literally all you have to do is dump into a skillet with bread and heat. The recipe below isn't that quick, but still pretty fast!

    Crumble bread

    Crumble homemade or store-bought bread.

Put into a skillet, don't do what I did and forget the butter!

    Delicious

This could be your main meal or served as a side.

    Easy Amish Chicken Dressing

I put the shredded chicken as optional. If you are using a chicken gravy with lots of bits of chicken in it, you may not need it If you are fine with just the chicken flavor and the bread, you'd not need the chicken. Celery is optional too, it does add some more color and crunch.

    • 3 eggs
    • 3 – 4 cups cubed bread
