For me, turkey is almost an afterthought for the Thanksgiving meal. I mean, the show's real stars are all the super sides: stuffings, dressings, sweet potatoes, green beans, broccoli salad, hot rolls, and on and on and on.

Amish Thanksgiving meals, when they are celebrated, tend to be more low-key. You may not see as many varieties of dishes on the table. but what you do almost always see: dressing or stuffing of some sort. There are usually a few bowls piled with a mountain of stuffing.
I know, I know, we can debate all day about the difference between dressing and stuffing. Stuffing goes in the bird, dressing is out of the bird. Yet, people still continuously interchange the two (including me).
Amish cooks tend to embrace homemade dressing year-round, especially something like this easy Amish bread dressing. Most Amish cooks bake their own bread, and if a loaf goes slower than anticipated and the bread begins to stale, a perfect use for it is to cube it into a bread dressing. You can make a loaf of homemade bread and use it in the dressing, or just buy a loaf and make bread cubes out of it.
Interestingly, the instructions the Amish woman put on this recipe for the baking are: 1 hour at 350 or 250° while at church. Lay foil on top but don’t seal for church time. Amish church services can run 3 - 3 ½ hours, so I am imagining this being popped in the oven shortly after arrival in the morning, and staying in the oven for 3 hours or more, but at 250. Because this dressing does do well in a slow oven it is very popular in Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch country on church days!
You can see this recipe, true to Amish form, is very basic, but that doesn't mean it skimps on flavor and if you don't want to fool with chicken broth, if you have leftover turkey broth from the bird, you can use turkey broth in this instead of chicken broth.
Make sure all the bread gets moistened with broth or butter. Some people make this in a big baking pan with one layer, others make it several layers deep in a deeper casserole bowl or prepared casserole dish. It doesn't really matter how you do it, just make sure all the bread gets moistened.
Pop it in the oven for an hour - or three (just lower to 250 and cover with foil) and you'll get this super easy and delicious dressing!
This recipe works well just the way it is: simple and flavorful. That said, I mean, you can do things like dice an onion, a stalk of celery, or a carrot or two into it for some crunch. In terms of dressing or or a stuffing recipe, this is about as easy as it gets! It is a delicious bread mixture that makes a super Thanksgiving side dish!
