    What Happened To Ho-Hos?

    Published: Oct 8, 2014 · Updated: Oct 8, 2014 by Kevin Williams | 2 Comments

swissrollI was at my parents the other day and discovered a stash of Hostess Ho-Hos in their pantry.  They keep these cylinders of sin in their house because of  one of my niece's (their granddaughter) affection for these snacks.  Hey, what are grandparents for if not to keep a steady flow of Ho-Ho's going to the next generation?  SIGH, so, naturally, I plucked one out of the box for a snack.  It had been years since I had had a Ho-Ho.  I do try to watch what I eat as an adult.  Instead, I just gorge on whoopie pies, cookies, and cakes at Amish bakeries.  Now that is so much better for you (insert sarcasm)!  Anyway, what struck me about the Ho-Ho is how tiny it seemed.  Maybe it's just that as a kid everything seemed larger.  But look at the photo, the Ho Ho is only about as big as two of my index fingers.  Were they always that tiny?   And I seem to remember them coming with two in a pack and wrapped in a foil-type material.  Or am I remembering incorrectly?  At 126 calories a Ho-Ho, I suppose one could do worse.  I know the world quaked when Twinkies and other Hostess goodies disappeared from shelves last year due to the parent company's bankruptcy, but I didn't really miss them.  Hostess Ding Dongs are probably my favorite, although I - thankfully - haven't probably eaten one of those in 25 years.  The Ho-Hos just have that tiny swirl of cream inside, the Ding Dongs give you a whole mouthful of fluffy cream inside.

Do you have a favorite store-bought snack cake?

I noticed that too, Kevin. I bought a box for my kiddos because they were on sale for $2.50/box at work. I was surprised to find micro-Ho Hos instead of the normal size I remember. You do remember correctly that they were wrapped in foil, but they were always wrapped individually. Little Debbie's Swiss Cake Rolls are the ones that are wrapped in pairs. As far as I can tell, the Swiss Cake Rolls are still the same size as ever.

Linda, I like that "micro-ho-hos"...that is a good term for the tiny snacks!:)
