Okay, who says a hamburger is just a hamburger? Burgers can be thick, thin, juicy, well-done, whatever...no matter how you like `em they are quintessentially American of a picnic food as anything else. Here's just a generic photo of grilling burgers (I ALWAYS add cheese to mine)
Maybe it is raining where you are and you can't grill out or maybe you just don't like to "fire up the barbie"....if so try Rachel Yoder's Baked Barbecued Hamburgers. There are some rather intriguing burger recipes below: baked burgers, burgers in muffin tins, the Holmes County burgers have Parmesan cheese in them, kind of like a meatball. The Kansas Amish Hamburgers submitted by Amish homemaker Katie Miller have applesauce in them (I think one other recipe below does also), which intrigues me. She also says to make a "hole" in the middle of the burger but doesn't really say whether it is a depression or an actual hole...I am thinking like a doughnut hole). Anyway, I would think the applesauce would add a real moistness to the burger. So, without further delay, try these five top-notch Amish recipes for America's picnic pastime!

I last saw "Plain and Fancy" over 50 years ago at a barn theatre in Canton, Ohio. I remember liking it very much, especially the love song "Young and Foolish."
