Strawberries are the ultimate signal of spring in Amish kitchens. The luscious rubies begin to sparkle in the spring sun and soon the whole family is out harvesting them, Amish children popping them straight into their mouths as they pick them or cooks making delicious treats like this Mom's Strawberry Crisp.

Strawberries are easy to grow and many Amish families have at least a small patch somewhere on their farmstead. There are some Amish-owned U-pick farms that I know of to where anyone can go and pick your their own.

Strawberries are amazingly flavorful and versatile. Amish cooks skillfully turn them into jams, jellies, breads, fillings, sauces, and just keep them around as a handy snack. Mom's Strawberry Crisp is an easy, delicious way to enjoy your spring bounty of berries.  Enjoy it with a cold scoop of ice cream,

If you’re driving around Amish country this time of year, it’s not uncommon to find roadside stands where Amish people sell and share their strawberry patch bounty. So see if you can score yourself some. There’s just something extra satisfying about eating something where you know where it came from, who grew it, and it’s just so fresh rather than eating strawberries that have been trucked in from 800 miles away
