Strawberries are a staple on Amish farmsteads, especially when they’re in season. If it’s an Amish and Mennonite settlement in Georgia that’s going to be earlier in the year than, say, Ohio or Maine. But whenever your strawberry season is, or even if you just get them at the supermarket any time of year, strawberries are such a versatile fruit… Amish homemakers blend strawberries into puddings, jams, cakes, and breads. This Amish strawberry bread is amazing.
Strawberries in general are one of my favorite fruits. As an aside, I used to drink Nestlé Quik strawberry milk all the time when I was a kid, I probably haven’t had any in 30 years. I need to buy some at the supermarket some time… There’s a farmstand near me that sells organic strawberry milk during season, and I promised my daughters I’d buy some of that sometime.
My parents made this bread over the Christmas holiday from an Amish recipe of mine and it is really good. It's a moist bread and I just ate it plain but I'm thinking slathered with some butter would make it really amazing.
Another "plus" about making this recipe now is that it reminds us all in the Midwestern USA that spring is just around the corner. So if you want a splash of spring, try making this bread. I think of it as a good "breakfast bread."
