I wrote yesterday about my stop in the Preble County, Ohio Amish settlement. My second stop was to turned out to be a visit to a Preble County, Ohio Amish refrigerator!
I was enticed by a sign advertising local honey for sale. I can rarely resist stopping at a home-based Amish business.  It really is the best way to learn about Amish culture and a win-win for everyone.  If there is a sign advertising fresh eggs for sale or honey, then obviously they want people to stop by to buy. And that's a great time to take in the surroundings and start a conversation with the proprietor.  Time is money and I find many Amish especially sensitive to that adage so I try to to be quick in my engagements. If I buy a $2 plate of cookies and then I expect the Amish person to stand there and talk to me for a half hour, that's not really a fair trade. The Amish are like anyone else: they're busy. Anyway, I was enticed by the sign of local honey for sale...
The signs lured me in....
Visit a Preble County, Ohio Amish refrigerator!
When I pulled into this Amish home on Wolverton Road in Preble County I saw a refrigerator sitting on the side porch. Turns out it is a little "refrigerator self-serve shop", which I thought was so fun.
The sign said that there were eggs, honey, and noodles in the fridge too, it was kind of like a treasure hunt to see what would be in there...
$2 for a dozen fresh eggs is pretty reasonable...
A HONEY OF A SELECTION!
When I hoped the fridge I was pleasantly surprised by a selection of relishes. Man, I had to restrain myself, because I bet these were really good. I love pepper relishes.
Bought this amazing-looking honey that was stocked in the fridge. All of their products have the Elkhorn Creek Farms label named after the small creek which meanders on their property.
$8 was more than I wanted to spend, but I figure for good local honey that probably wasn't a bad price. They have a "make your own change" box in the fridge. All I had was a $10 and I felt weird rifling through the box to make change (even though that is what it is there for), so I just ended up paying $10 for it.
Clothes on the line added Amish authenticity to the stop. Note the stockings hanging from an improvised bicycle wheel, a very common device used on Amish farms for drying items like socks...
Drying clothing and a playground set....
Definitely worth exploring Wolverton Road in western Preble County, Ohio to experience the growing Amish ambiance there!

So charming! I am especially touched by the trust they are showing the random
public. Of course a roving reporter named Kevin is not your ordinary random guy! Thank
you for sharing this peaceful piece of heaven on earth.

Agreed, Elaine, the trust is touching and I'd hope anyone who buys something, makes the correct change or leaves a little more!
