A GROWING COMMUNITY
I've been watching with interest an Amish community taking root in Preble County, Ohio. It's been almost a year since I went exploring there and I had the chance the other day to do a follow-up visit. The settlement has seen a 20 percent increase in growth since then (from four families to five), with more expected to arrive. Interestingly, the center of the settlement seems to be taking shape on Wolverton Road north of Campbellstown, near the Indiana state line. The spot seems a little unexpected because it's really just a stone's throw from busy I-70 and bustling Richmond, Indiana. Preble County has far more rural areas to pick from so I'm a little surprised at this spot. There are three Amish families who all have produce and bakery items for sale just south of the intersection with US 35. If you head south on Wolverton you'll see a produce stand and sign for homemade donuts (Saturdays only for the doughnuts). This was my first stop and I have to say - and I have been to a LOT of Amish produce stands over the years - this is one of the best.
AMAZING AMISH PRODUCE STAND!
The produce was outstanding, but it was more just the variety, cleanliness, and convenience. You just pull in, browse the shop, pick out produce and there is a self-serve refrigerator with homemade candies and jellies inside. Just an amazing Amish experience. Here are some photos:
This Preble County, Ohio Amish produce stand may be small but it makes up for its lack of size with its variety, quality, and convenience...
The produce stand is on Wolverton Road just south of US 35, if you are coming from the north, it is about 1 mile on the left.
The sign says it all: homemade donuts, candy, produce, I'm in! I actually only had $5 cash on hand, so I turned back and went to a nearby truck stop off I-70 and went to an ATM. You'll need to bring cash, the ATM , though, was literally only 5 minutes away, this Amish settlement seems far removed, but it is not....
plumb heads of cabbage and those are honeydews on the right, I bought one and they were amazingly sweet and juicy!
SIGN OF THE TIMES: Sigh, just when I thought I had found the perfect "escape" I was jolted back to the present...Face masks for sale...I wore a mask of my own to the store, but the kind Amish lady said that they don't require or expect customers to wear them...
and peppers...
In the self-serve `fridge is an assortment of homemade candies and jellies...I got some of the chocolate-covered Ritz candies...so good!
Laundry hanging on the line at the nearby house...you really do get an authentic Amish experience at this stand, in addition to great produce!
Plenty of mums for sale....
Plenty of sign
