Cinnamon rolls are a mainstay in Amish kitchens, so why not Amish Cinnamon Roll Muffins? There are so many cinnamon roll recipes, from caramel to pecan to fruit-filled cinnamon rolls. Through it all, the kneading, the baking, the age-old family recipes, give the cinnamon roll a mystique in the Amish kitchen. SIGH, for me, there is nothing better than a big, fat, puffy, caramel-smothered cinnamon roll that is warm. Holy moly, that is the pinnacle of Amish deliciousness. I’ve tried cinnamon rolls from Amish bakeries that are just so-so (frosting out of a can and chewy bread) and others that are so melt-in-your mouth amazing that you want to swoon (soft bread, fresh, homemade, dripping caramel).
There are plenty of other popular non-cinnamon sweet rolls in Amish kitchens: sticky buns (caramel), brown sugar rolls, honey rolls, and the like , but nothing seems to capture the imagination more than cinnamon rolls.
This recipe is an attempt to cross-breed the deliciousness of a cinnamon roll with the ease of a muffin. I think it sounds good. I know I’ve been to Amish bakeries where they’ve attempted to do cinnamon roll muffins. Not everyone wants to knead and roll and with these you don’t have to, that’s the beauty of it. And during today's heightened hygiene environment, nice to not have to break off a sticky cinnamon roll from the larger mass, these muffins can just be popped out and enjoyed as single-serve options.
I know how I am, when cinnamon is involved, more is better. So I might up my cinnamon ratio, but that is just me.
Amish Cinnamon Roll Muffins
Reader, Carolyn made them and shared these photos. She said these tasted a bit like a really good coffee cake - moist with a cinnamony sugar crunch on top. She says they’re delicious without the glaze too. Other observations from Carolyn:
- The recipe made 24 full size muffins with a little left over. It could easily be split in two to make 12 muffins.
- The glaze recipe made a stiff frosting rather than a spreadable glaze. A little more orange juice should be added, bit by bit until it looks like the picture, thin enough to spread. I ended up using about one more tablespoon of orange juice.
- A second coat of glaze can be added if the first soaks into the hot muffin. There’s plenty to do that.
