Nestled in a cozy corner of Tuscarawas County, Ohio is the Swiss-infused town of Sugarcreek, Ohio. The town is known for its Amish ambiance, friendly demeanor, and Swiss roots, celebrated in the fascinating local Alpine Hills Museum. The quaint downtown is lined with eclectic shops (which my daughters loved exploring!)
And of course no visit to Sugarcreek is complete without stopping by to see the world's largest cuckoo clock spring into action at the top and bottom of every hour.
An animatronic five-piece Bavarian band emerges from the Swiss chalet to play some tunes at the top and bottom of each hour.
My daughters enjoyed the music and the festivities supplied by the cuckoo clock!
The Alpine Hills Museum is a super place to start exploring Sugarcreek because gives you a sense of place and history. Essentially two cultures co-existed in parallel here for a long time: a genuine Swiss population of yodeling, cheesemaking mountain dwellers while the Amish, with their own separate historical roots and beliefs, also drifted into the area.
Horse-drawn buggies can be seen around town (and plenty of Amish on ebikes!).
Things to Do in Sugarcreek
Beyond the iconic cuckoo clock, Sugarcreek offers plenty to keep visitors engaged. Browse the local shops downtown for Swiss crafts, Amish quilts, and handmade goods. The Alpine Hills Museum itself is worth a solid hour or two exploring the intersection of Swiss and Amish heritage. If you're visiting during fall, the surrounding countryside is stunning for scenic drives past farmland and buggies. Stop at one of the local bakeries or restaurants for authentic Swiss or Amish-style food — my daughters and I found the food genuinely good, not just tourist-trap fare. Finally, if you're interested in Amish furniture, several local craftspeople have showrooms in the area where you can see handmade pieces and chat with the makers directly.
There are accomodations in the area that range from charming AirBnBs, bed and breakfasts, or the sprawling Carlisle Inn, operated by Dutch Hospitality Group. We chose the Carlisle Inn and really enjoyed it. Gave us a "vacation vibe" with a vast second floor commons area that allows for relaxing, puzzles, or playing board games. Free popcorn and cookies are served each evening.
Carlisle also has the Dutch Valley Amish-style restaurant and a theater on site.

And if you are a fan of this fun mystery series on UPtv, you can do what my daughters and I did which was drive around town looking for locations featured in the show which is filmed in Sugarcreek. You might even get lucky and spot some of the cast around town!
