Mashed potatoes are, of course, a staple of Thanksgiving meals. There’s nothing better than fluffy mashed potatoes with warm gravy, or melted butter. Add some salt and it's heaven.

Amish Take and Bake Mashed Potatoes

. When mashed potatoes are done right, there are a few things better. Homemade are the gold standard, but a frozen box of Bob Evans mashed potatoes are OK too if that's all you can do. But homemade, yeah, the best.

The thing is there only so many different ways you could make mashed potatoes. It’s kind of like an apple pie. How many only so many ways you can put apples into a crust and bake.

Because the Amish have so many large gatherings, there are some recipes that are specifically adapted to feed many miles. And this is one of them. If you’re having a dozen more people or more so for your Thanksgiving dinner, this Amish Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes recipe is perfectly proportioned.

This is what The New York Times recently wrote about Mashed Potatoes:

Chilling creamy mashed potatoes stiffens and dries them, but also retrograde their starch, which helps prevent them from becoming pasty. When good, chilled mashed potatoes (and sweet potatoes) are gently reheated over a pan of hot water with more cream and butter, they become even silkier.

So that is an intriguing tip. And my Amish friends almost always add cream cheese to their mashed potatoes because, I am told, when you do that to mashed potatoes that are going to sitting out for awhile (such as at a potluck dinner) the potatoes just hold up better. This recipe for Amish Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes has a pound of cream cheese in it! But the "secret" ingredient in this recipe is the buttermilk, that is what really gives this a super amazing flavor. Another tip I was given by an Amish cook is instead of 10 pounds of Yukon Gold, do 8 pounds and 2 pounds of sweet potatoes. Some people really love the potato blend, but I'll leave that up to you.

These Amish Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes you can either make them at home and take them to your dining room table, or you can put them in a big roaster and take them to wherever it is your having your meal. These potatoes travel well.

The ingredients for these perfect, fluffy, and flavorful mashed potatoes are so easy.

This all looks so perfect. But, again, the buttermilk is what separates these mashed potatoes from run-of-the-mill mashed taters.
