Looking for a weekend Amish-inspired menu? Pair these two recipes together for a powerful one-two punch!
Six Layer Casserole
2 cups raw hamburger
2 cups sliced raw potatoes
2 cups chopped celery
½ cup diced onions
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 cup diced green pepper
Thin slices onions, optional
2 cups canned tomatoes
Method
Grease a casserole dish. Sprinkle each layer with salt and pepper before adding the next layer. Place potatoes in the bottom of the casserole. Add the layer of celery. Add the layer of hamburger. Add the layer of onions. Add the green pepper. Pour the tomatoes over the mixture.
Bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees F.

AMISH MOLASSES CRUMB PIE
1 cup molasses
2 cups boiling water
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup brown sugar
2 unbaked 9" deep-dish pie crusts
FOR CRUMB MIXTURE:
2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon baking soda
pinch of salt
Beat egg slightly. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 cup brown sugar.
Stir in molasses and boiling water.
Put egg mixture in refrigerator and chill while making crumb mixture.
To prepare the crumb mixture, combine 2 cups flour, 1 cup brown sugar and ½ cup shortening and mix until fine crumbs form.
- Alternate pouring crumbs and egg mixture into one of the unbaked pie shells, starting and ending with crumbs.
- Bake for 35 minutes.
