    Old-Fashioned Amish Marshmallow Pie

Marshmallows are a sweet, festive food for all seasons, whether they be roasted over a summer campfire or enjoyed melted in a hot cup of winter cocoa.  This is a recipe for marshmallow pie that came to me from an Amish woman in Illinois. This pie is a twist on some of the more common cream pie found in Amish kitchens.

    Old-Fashioned Amish Marshmallow Pie

It is a wonderful pie for the holiday season, sweet and packed full of marshmallow flavor.  We made a marshmallow pie this week using the recipe below and it tastes as good as these photos look.  If you are a marshmallow lover, you won't want to skip this recipe.

Marshmallows enjoy a long, rich, culinary history among the Amish.  Keep in mind, marshmallow creme is the foundation of one of the most famous Amish dishes: Amish church spread.  Marshmallows are an inexpensive sweet treat that have really found favor with Amish cooks over the past half century.

Amish bulk food stores often sell large amounts of marshmallows.   The modern marshmallow is a 20th century creation so the introduction of marshmallows into Amish culinary culture is relatively new. Marshmallows or marshmallow creme in homemade hot chocolate is another Amish favorite, or simply sprinkling mini-marshmallows on top of homemade granola or cereal.

This recipe is another no-bake pie that is elegant and delicious and out of all pie recipes is just so easy. And marshmallows are perfect to celebrate the season. Use mini-marshmallows like these if you have them available, because they just work better in this recipe.

Any kind of milk will work for this pie. I mean, if you are going to follow the Amish way to the letter, you'd probably use whole milk. If you wanted to bulk up and firm up the consistency of the pie, you could add a half a brick of cream cheese to the marshmallow mixture but it's not necessary. You could also add some heavy whipping cream. One thing I definitely would add if I made this again is a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Everything is better with vanilla.

    Amish Marshmallow Pie

This pie slices so well. I remember before we made it I imagined it slicing and oozing out all over, but let the pie cool and it firms up so well. And feel free to experiment, add some cinnamon, or stir in graham cracker crumbs to go with the graham cracker crust. Try some caramel or butterscotch syrup if you like. Maybe use some colorful mini-marshmallows if you want to add a more festive flair if you'd like.

You'll want to use a 9-inch pie pan. And our famous pat-a-pan pie crust is perfect for this!

I do think the colorful marshmallows or some Christmas sprinkles would be festive. There are all sorts of ways you can make the pie more colorful if you'd like. But if you are just after pure flavor and don't care about the color, make the pie exactly as the recipe here says and how it looks in the photos and you'll be great. It's always nice to serve a delicious pie along with the Christmas cookies!

Did she use some of the marshmallow mixture before adding the whipped topping to the top of the pie? Also, did she sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top of the pie? Looks yummy, I, too, will have to try this one.

This looks delicious. Kevin, would you know if whipped topping means a "cool whip" type of product? Or did Rachel use heavy whipping cream which she whipped up into whipped cream? Thank you. I would love to make this for the holidays, too. The picture is gorgeous!

Thanks for pointing out the omission, Tammy, I just added it, it should be 10 ounces of marshmallows!
