Amish in the News: Teens and Money; Brethren Bakery; Update on Crashes, Millie Serves Up Ham and Veggie Chowder, and Tree Wranglers!

    Published: Jan 19, 2015 · Updated: Jan 19, 2015 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

We've got a full roster of Amish in the News today, so let's jump right in!

Amish Teens and Money:  This was an interesting article but I think when/if you read it, all you can really do is take it as one Amish family's perspective on teens and money. I don't think - as the author attempts to do - you can make any sweeping conclusions about the Amish as a whole from this.  I think you'll see different parenting philosophies in different Amish homes in different Amish settlements.  The article is insightful because it does show you how some Amish parents play a very "interventionist" role in their children's earnings.  If done properly and with goodwill I think this can be a good thing, sort of like "money with training wheels" for kids. Millie Otto Serves Up Ham and Veggie Chowder:  Check in with Illinois Amish writer Millie Otto, this week she serves up ham and veggie chowder!

UPDATE:  Just a follow-up story to the two Amish children killed in separate traffic accidents in Upstate New York last week.  Terrible tragedies, but typical Amish resilience and stoicism sets in. Click here.

BRETHREN BAKERY:   For those lucky enough to live near Logansport, Indiana, you've got an awesome option for authentic pastries, pies and confections churned out by an Old German Baptist Brethren family.  Check out this article to read about the Kuns bakery.

Tree Wrangling Amish:    Often Amish workers will take on jobs few others have the pure physical prowess and manpower to do...in this case, getting a town's "tree sign" back into shape.  Click here to read more.
